Brexit: There May Be Trouble Ahead
LOCAL PARTY MEMBER, ALISTAIR TINTO shares his personal thoughts on the outcome of the EU Referendum.
How depressing it was to wake on Friday morning and learn that the nightmare of a vote in favour of Brexit had actually happened!
The tragedy is that many of the people who voted for Brexit weren’t really voting for Brexit at all. The poor and disadvantaged, those who have been left behind by the effects of austerity economics, those whom the Labour Party has lost touch with, those who don’t have decent housing, those earning low wages, those on zero hours contracts, those whose kids’ schools are overcrowded, those whose accident and emergency units are in crisis,
Perhaps people thought it was immigration that caused every problem in our society. Perhaps it was frustration with the rich elite who have been getting steadily richer as wages have been frozen year on year. People thought voting out would solve the problem. It will not. Boris Johnson won’t care any more about people than David Cameron and George Osborne ever did.
Britain has become smaller, weaker and more divided as a result of this vote. Xenophobia, bordering on racism, has now been licensed and is becoming accepted in mainstream discourse. The sad thing is that, as it starts to unfold, it is becoming obvious what a terrible mistake has been made. Now virtually unstoppable. It’s a Greek tragedy unfolding on a national and international scale.
The world has now become more fractured and more dangerous. I feel sorry for all the young people, the majority of whom voted against this idiocy because they know that the world is better together than apart: they are going to have to live with the consequences.

Historic Corbyn Visit Boosts Cornish Britain IN Europe Campaign
THE CORNISH ARM of the campaign for the UK remaining in the EU received a massive boost from Labour Leader, Jeremy Corbyn who spoke at a Labour IN rally on 4th June in Newquay.
The trip to Cornwall was the first time in 20 years a serving Labour Party Leader has visited the County. In his speech, Mr Corbyn said: “We know that the European Union is very far from perfect, but it has brought huge investment into Cornwall, it has helped clean up Cornwall’s beaches and brought jobs and workers’ rights.”
Jeremy Corbyn, who, according to the regional press, is proving to be a magnet for recruiting new Labour members in Cornwall, distilled his arguments for staying IN Europe into a few points:
- We can only deal with environmental issues through cooperation across national borders
- We won’t solve the refugee crisis with barbed wire. We must work across Europe to share & offer the hand of humanity
- We should transform our energy industry and create high tech jobs in green energy
- We must not export pollution. We must act across national boundaries to protect biodiversity
- The EU protects employment rights especially for women, part time workers and the disabled. The Tories want to rip up workers’ rights
Staying in the EU offers a lifeline to many in Cornwall through the funding of many infrastructure and institutional projects via the European Social, Regional Development and Agricultural Development funds. Access to these funds contributes hundreds of millions of pounds towards initiatives in Cornwall designed to increase and maintain employment opportunities for Cornish residents and through funding the development of local institutions, infrastructure and businesses.
Corbyn’s message was that Britain needed to vote to remain in the European Union on June 23 – to protect jobs, workers’ rights and environmental standards, such as the clean bathing waters which are vital to Cornwall’s tourism industry.
