THE CORNISH ARM of the campaign for the UK remaining in the EU received a massive boost from Labour Leader, Jeremy Corbyn who spoke at a  Labour IN rally on 4th June in Newquay.

The trip to Cornwall was the first time in 20 years a serving Labour Party Leader has visited the County. In his speech, Mr Corbyn said: “We know that the European Union is very far from perfect, but it has brought huge investment into Cornwall, it has helped clean up Cornwall’s beaches and brought jobs and workers’ rights.”

Jeremy Corbyn, who, according to the regional press, is proving to be a magnet for recruiting new Labour members in Cornwall, distilled his arguments for staying IN Europe into a few points:

  • We can only deal with environmental issues through cooperation across national borders
  • We won’t solve the refugee crisis with barbed wire. We must work across Europe to share & offer the hand of humanity
  • We should transform our energy industry and create high tech jobs in green energy
  • We must not export pollution. We must act across national boundaries to protect biodiversity
  • The EU protects employment rights especially for women, part time workers and the disabled. The Tories want to rip up workers’ rights

Staying in the EU offers a lifeline to many in Cornwall through the funding of many infrastructure and institutional projects via the European Social, Regional Development and Agricultural Development funds. Access to these funds contributes hundreds of millions of pounds towards initiatives in Cornwall designed to increase and maintain employment opportunities for Cornish residents and through funding the development of local institutions, infrastructure and businesses.

Corbyn’s message was that Britain needed to vote to remain in the European Union on June 23 – to protect jobs, workers’ rights and environmental standards, such as the clean bathing waters which are vital to Cornwall’s tourism industry.
